IOM celebrates International Day for Protection of Children by constructing and opening a new playground for 1500 pupils.
On 1 June 2023, an opening ceremony was held at Secondary School No. 17 in Jabor Rasulov, Sughd for a new children's playground funded by the EU and constructed by IOM (UN Migration Agency).
The construction of this playground was selected by the local community as a quick impact project which would bring the most benefit to families and households in Jabor Rasulov.
The school selected by the community has approximately 1,500 pupils, which comprises both Tajik and Afghan children. Creating spaces for children to play, interact and participate in sporting activities is not only key to enhancing social cohesion, but is also a powerful means of empowering both Tajik and Afghan women and girls. Sports, and ensuring a safe place for children of all nationalities, genders, and ages to practice it and play, teaches children of both communities the values of teamwork, self-reliance and resilience; has a multiplier effect on their health, education and leadership development; contributes to self-esteem; builds social connections; and challenges harmful gender norms.
The opening of this playground is an important step forward in providing children with access to sports and safe play, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle and encouraging more diverse social interaction.
The construction of this playground was made possible through funding provided by the EU.
